USA : Truck shortage & domestic transportation challenges

We draw your attention to the general and growing shortage of truck drivers and road haulers which is causing an increase in delivery times in some parts of the US and Canada that may cause extra demurrage, detention and storage costs (let’s remember these costs are the responsibility of the merchandise payable by the consignees or their custom brokers before moving the container out of the terminal or ramp).

The transport sector has been under pressure for many years and a peak is currently being reached due to the terrible weather events that have hit the USA in 2017 and early 2018 (hurricanes of category 4 & 5, severe wildfires and recent snow storms).

First day of Fall

With that first day of Fall, let’s remember some changes in temperature can occur and be extremely sensitive or suddenly severe especially in some areas such as the Mid-West and/or when your wines are shipped from far away sailing with a long transit time making difficult the anticipation of temperature upon arrival.

Please note that the coverage of "alteration of temperature" with a container equipped with thermal blanket is suspended during the period from November 1 (date of arrival) through March 31rst for any shipment going to the Mid-West Area – Great Lakes area or any “remote” inland destinations.

So it is recommended to use reefer containers to prevent and protect your wines with that upmost solution.

Transportation insurance

Shipping containers through oceans has been a success over the decades. It’s so efficient that we forget the natural environment can be really tough and damageable. The container lines recent history

The shipping industry has been moving on with further concentration as here below reminded.

However, 2018 has recorded even lower scores in terms of schedule reliablity. Not only vessels are getting later but when they are late, the delay is further than the years before. With very slim global profit (when positive) carriers are reluctant to increase vessel speed for schedules recovering. Other reasons come from more and more port congestions at loading/discharge and the truck driver’s shortages in USA and also at countries of origin. Improvments would be expected and welcome but the recent performances do not support positive changes.

Change in MED services

Both Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance services from MED to US East are merging into one single service as from early December.

The 2 existing services are deploying 4500 TEU vessels. The new one will deploy 8500 TEU vessels. The total capacity is slightly lower.

However in case of delays or blank sailings, alternative are very limited ; for instance, from FOS, there is no direct sailing alternative (only via Algeciras with Maersk or Valencia with MSC).

Carriers are announcing this is to recover from low freight rates and improve the service reliability as we have all noted less accuracy and more lead times in worldwide shipments.
