NYK, MOL and K Line to merge container shipping businesses

Japan’s three major ocean carriers - Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, Mitsui OSK Lines and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha - have agreed on Monday October 31st, 2016 to spin off their container divisions and merge them July 1.

The merger is the latest of major moves occurred over the past two years including acquisitions and here below changes in alliances punctuated by the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping in late August.

The new Japanese Shipping company will become the 6th largest container line.

Maersk & MSC to set the 2M Alliance
The merge of China Shipping and COSCO, CMA-CGM taking over APL and making Alliance with Evergreen, OOCL and China/Cosco, altogether planning to set the Ocean Alliance by April 1st, 2017
Hapag-Lloyd merged with CSAV and soon with UASC with the original plan to set THE Alliance by April 1st, 2017 with NYK and K Line.

N.B. Hamburg Süd, ZIM and ACL still stand alone however both get strong ties and existing slot exchanges with Hapag-Lloyd.

2016 HARVESTS in ITALY

Italy confirms its leadership among the world wine producers despite a slight decrease in volume by 2% compared to 2015 and only -1% compared to the last 5 years. The quality should be good too. As often, there is contrast among the regions : the wine production is expected to increase by +5% in Piemonte & Emilia-Romagna and by +2% in Veneto, Lazio, Abruzzo & Puglia while a decrease of -4% in Friuli Venezia Giulia, -8% in Toscana, -9% in Trento Alto Adige, -13% in Lombardia, -15% in Sicilia and -20% in Campania.

The container lines recent history

The shipping industry has been moving on with further concentration as here below reminded.

However, 2018 has recorded even lower scores in terms of schedule reliablity. Not only vessels are getting later but when they are late, the delay is further than the years before. With very slim global profit (when positive) carriers are reluctant to increase vessel speed for schedules recovering. Other reasons come from more and more port congestions at loading/discharge and the truck driver’s shortages in USA and also at countries of origin. Improvments would be expected and welcome but the recent performances do not support positive changes.

Change in MED services

Both Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance services from MED to US East are merging into one single service as from early December.

The 2 existing services are deploying 4500 TEU vessels. The new one will deploy 8500 TEU vessels. The total capacity is slightly lower.

However in case of delays or blank sailings, alternative are very limited ; for instance, from FOS, there is no direct sailing alternative (only via Algeciras with Maersk or Valencia with MSC).

Carriers are announcing this is to recover from low freight rates and improve the service reliability as we have all noted less accuracy and more lead times in worldwide shipments.
