Negotiations between ILWU and PMA

Beside the current delays we are facing on the US West coast, particularly in the Californian ports in part due to the local trucking situation, we would like to remind you that the US West Coast dockers, represented by the ILWU and the US West Coast ports through the PMA are in the process of negotiating the renewal of their labor contracts. The sensitive nature of these discussions could lead to possible strikes as from July 1st 2014. As sailing times vary from 1 month to 45 days according to the wine producing country involved, we would strongly advise you to take this information into consideration when planning your future orders.
 
Furthermore, should strikes occur, that would also create a very serious and critical congestion in other ports such as the Golf and US East Coast ports (about 300,000 teus are handled per week through the US West coast ports). Several ocean carriers, such as the one indicated in the attached document, have started to send reminders concerning the congestion surcharge which was filed in 2012 with the FMC (during the negotiations between the USMX et ILA). It would represent significant extra costs, about $1000 per container. It may also imply additional detention, demurrage and storage fees in the event of a strike.

G6 Alliance on Transat-Atlantic trades

After the announcement of the creation of the P3 network through which CMA-CGM, Maersk & MSC will operate joint services, the New World Alliance and the Great Alliance have decided to tighten their cooperation by creating the G6 Alliance (APL, HMM, HL, MOL, NYK & OOCL).

The G6 is already active on the Far East-Europe routes. However, they have announced several new joint services as from the second quarter of 2014.

TRANSO will be able to ship your wines, spirits & other beverages also through the G6 Alliance and their following Trans-Atlantic services :

Alliance between the TOP 3 carriers – The P3 Alliance

Following 5 years of crisis which has deeply impacted the shipping industry, the TOP 3 carriers, MAERSK, MSC & CMA-CGM have decided to join forces on some of the major ocean routes by pooling their vessels. At this stage, 252 vessels are involved, totaling 2,6 million TEU deployed on 28 loops. This will cover Asia-Europe, Trans-Pacific & Trans-Atlantic trades. The P3 fleet will be managed by a new joint vessel operating center located in London. Within this alliance, MAERSK represents 42% of the vessel capacity, MSC 34% and CMA-CGM 24%. Each line will have fully independent sales, pricing, marketing and customer service functions, only the operational aspects will be shared.

The P3 Alliance will start in the second quarter of 2014 subject to approval from the relevant authorities. On October 22nd, 2013, the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) chairman called on fellow regulators in the European Union and China to join a global regulatory summit concerning the P3 Alliance.

The shipping industry has been moving on with further concentration as here below reminded.

However, 2018 has recorded even lower scores in terms of schedule reliablity. Not only vessels are getting later but when they are late, the delay is further than the years before. With very slim global profit (when positive) carriers are reluctant to increase vessel speed for schedules recovering. Other reasons come from more and more port congestions at loading/discharge and the truck driver’s shortages in USA and also at countries of origin. Improvments would be expected and welcome but the recent performances do not support positive changes.

Change in MED services

Both Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance services from MED to US East are merging into one single service as from early December.

The 2 existing services are deploying 4500 TEU vessels. The new one will deploy 8500 TEU vessels. The total capacity is slightly lower.

However in case of delays or blank sailings, alternative are very limited ; for instance, from FOS, there is no direct sailing alternative (only via Algeciras with Maersk or Valencia with MSC).

Carriers are announcing this is to recover from low freight rates and improve the service reliability as we have all noted less accuracy and more lead times in worldwide shipments.
